Appearance Day of the Divine Protector - Lord Nrsimihadev

Hare Krishna dear friends,

Today marks the day on which Lord Nrsimihadev appeared to remove the obstacles for a young five-year-old boy named Prahlada. The day is called Nrshima Caturdasi and is the appearance of Lord Krishna in the form of half man-lion incarnation.

The obstacles Prahlada faced were the anger and wrath of his father, named Hiranyakasipu who controlled the world. Hiranyakasipu was extremely proud and hated Lord Vishnu (or Krishna). His son, however, was a great devotee of Lord Vishnu and constantly thought of Lord Vishnu. Thus they were always at odds with each other. One day Hiranyakasiphu asked his little son where the Lord resides, and Prahlada replied that the Lord resides everywhere.

This greatly angered Hiranyakasipu and asked Prahlada- Well if He’s everywhere, is He in this pillar? Hiranyakaysipu was ready to kill Prahlada and struck the pillar. However, to substantiate Prahlada’s statements, the Lord emerges from the pillar in His wonderful incarnation as Nrsimhadev, a half lion and half man.

The backstory tells us that Hiranyakashipu could not be killed by a man or a beast, nor on land or sea, neither day nor night and, without weapons.  So with all these benedictions, Hiranyakashipu had thought he had it all covered and no one would ever defeat him. However, the Lord tricked him and attacked Hiranyakashipu at twilight (when it is neither day nor night) on the threshold of a courtyard (neither indoors nor outdoors), and placed the evil Hiranyakaspyu on his thighs (neither earth nor air). Then using his claws (neither living nor non-living), he defeated Hiranyakasiphu. This tells us that the Lord can defeat our mundane calculations, no matter how greatly thought out they are.

Although Lord Nrsimhadev’s form looks somewhat frightening to those who may not know the story, the incarnation is one of deep compassion for living beings. Lord Nrsimha Deva is the protector of His devotees and remover of all obstacles and difficulties in the path of devotion to the Lord.

Anyone can offer prayers to Lord Nrsimhadev to request guidance in hard times just as he guided and protected little Prahlada.

Srimati Sita Devi‘s Appearance Day - Sita Navami

Hare Krishna dear friends,

Today marks the appearance of Sita Devi, who was not born in any mother’s womb. She appeared from the Earth, and she went back to the Earth.

Once when Maharaja Janak was ploughing fields, he found a baby girl from the earth. He accepted her as his daughter and raised her as his very own. Sri Ram is powerful, and Sita Devi is his power. If we take shelter from the power, we will automatically come into the shelter of the Powerful.

In the famous epic Ramayana, wherever there is Sita Devi, no demons were killed. They received punishment- such as Jayant, and even Shrupnakha was not killed, was punishment for cutting off her nose. Sita Devi has a soft shelter for all. And she taught a lesson that we should destroy sins, not sinful people.

After the death of Ravana, Sri Hanuman wanted to kill those demons who troubled Sita Devi, but she told Sri Hanuman that there were no faults in these servants; they just obeyed the order of their master. This is the mercy of Sita Devi, taking shelter of whom we get Sri Ram’s shelter too.

The most important lesson Sita Devi told all of us is that just like she had to be separated from Sri Ram due to her attraction to a Golden Deer similarly, our attraction towards material things moves us all away from the Lord. Thus staying in the circle of repeated life and death and facing all miseries.

Sita Devi’s radiance and inner strength serve as an inspiration to women around the world, reminding us of the importance of maintaining a spiritual connection in our lives.

Sita Devi serves to portray an “inner harmony” which she maintained through very challenging trials and tribulations. To learn more about this beautiful topic please read the article by Vishaka Devi Dasi - Sita Devi’s Inner Harmony.

All the best,

Tribute to Kadamba Kanana Maharaj

Hare Krishna dear friends,

Here is a beautiful tribute to Kadamba Kanana Maharaj by my dear friend Radhacaran Prabhu, who is now an initiating guru and preaching in China:

A Great Vaisnava has left this world today*, with so much inspiration and enough to keep us focused on service to Srila Prabhupada.

Maharaj was known all over the world for many things: his lectures, his kirtans, his preaching and his powered energy.

But let us also remember that he was the mastermind behind Srila Prabhupada samadhi. He was also behind the construction of Srila Prabhupada samadhi in Mayapur. He also risked his life to secure the land adjacent to the KB Mandir. But wait, there is more. He was the general manager for the KB Mandir in the 80s. BB Govinda Swami was the temple president and I was made the head cook. That was 1983.

When I took up my service, Kadamba Kanana Maharaj said, “Follow me.” We went to the top floor of the gurukula building. He gave me a set of keys to a room that was full with dozens of tins of 10kg pure ghee. “Use it wisely,” he said.

Kadamba Kanana Maharaj never missed a mangal arati and loved to sing Vibhavari Sesa. Did you know he spoke fluent Hindi?

You may recall how he always had his sleeves rolled up. He was always ready to get to work to make things happen. Basically, he never stopped. Thank you Maharaj.

I did not personally know Kadamba Kanana Maharaj, but last year at Rathayatra in New York, he walked by me, and I saw him, and I must have had such a sad face, knowing his condition, and he looked at me with a big smile, and said “Rukmini! Why the funeral face?!“

This great devotee, who walked in our midst, has shown us how to live, and how to leave this world in pure Krishna, consciousness, with a big smile!

May we all be blessed to realize and follow your example, dear respected Maharaj! You will be embraced by Lord Sri Krishna, when you arrive!

All the best,
Rukmini Walker

Appearance Day of Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakur

Dear Friends,

February 10th is the holy Appearance Day of Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakur, the beloved guru of our beloved Srila Prabhupada.

Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakur was a lifelong celibate, first as a brahmacari, and then a sannyasi, a brilliant scholar and author, and known for his uncompromising devotion to speaking the truth, even among those who opposed him and even threatened his life. He was also amazingly progressive in his views on utilizing everything of the modern world in the service of the Lord.

In the following excerpt from his Harmonist newspaper, he expresses such progressive views on relationships between a husband and wife, in a spiritual relationship, which is called the grihastha ashram. The following article is entitled, “Relations Between the Sexes”.

“The cardinal principle of grihastha ashram is that no one may be the owner of any property or service of another. Everyone is only a servant whose activities are ever in service of the Lord. Similarly, the sole object of everyone’s service as the only master, only friend, only son, and only consort is Kṛṣṇa.

Marrying and giving in marriage do not give rise to any rights of a master either to the husband or to the wife. Men and women are joined in wedlock for the purpose of serving each other in the performance of the joint service of Kṛṣṇa. The wife is not an object of enjoyment of the husband, nor vice versa. They do not marry for gratifying their sexual appetites. They marry for pleasing the Lord, not for pleasing themselves.

They choose for their partners only such persons who serve God better than themselves. They offer themselves to be accepted by their partners for the favor of being allowed to share in their superior service of Hari. Neither the husband nor the wife should claim the services of his or her partner on their own account. Both of them are only to offer their services if and when their partner is pleased to permit them to share their service of Hari. None of them can force their partners to serve them…

The reason why the guru does not ordinarily ask any person to enter the state of wedlock is that it is very rare to find anyone in this world who is willing to regard his or her wife or husband as worthy of his or her unconditional services. This is, however, exactly the only relationship between husband and wife that alone can be sanctioned by the guru.”

Can we also strive to extend such unconditional loving service to each other, and all others we meet as we try to share the teachings of Lord Sri Kṛṣṇa through this Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement?

All the best,
Rukmini Walker

No tenemos audiencia.

Rukmini Walker

Karma, Grace, and Free Will - Perspectives for Integral Transformation Vaisnava Christian Dialogue

Dear Friends,
With Christmas coming up in just a few days, I thought you might find it interesting to hear a report about our recent Vaisnava Christian Dialogue that was held online last week with Catholic, Protestant, Sri Vaisnava and Gaudiya Vaisnava participants in India, the US and the UK.My husband, Anuttama and I have been hosting two such dialogues each year. Our dialogue in the DC area where we live, which has continued for over twenty-five years, in person until Covid. Last April we met again in person for the first time in two years at our ISKCON of DC temple. Our dialogue in India has been going on for about ten years. In person before Covid, and now online for the last few years. The participants are all practitioners, and many of them scholars and professors. Some are Jesuit priests, one is a Catholic nun, and one is an archbishop as well. We have no audience. It has been a meeting of authentic hearts across religious and cultural boundaries. Our format is that each previous year, we conjointly choose a topic. Four members agree to write papers-from the perspective of their own tradition- one from the outlook of a Protestant Christian, one from a Catholic perspective, one sharing as a Sri Vaisnava, and one from a Gaudiya Vaisnava perspective.Culturally, this dialogue is interesting and different in that many of the participants are practitioners of a minority religion (Christians in India, Vaisnavas in the US) in a country where the majority of the population follows another religious tradition. In this dialogue we also have some Indian born Vaisnavas (men, women, and sannyasis) who grew up attending Catholic schools, and feel grateful for the foundational moral education they received there. One of our participants, Parijata Devi from Mumbai was happily surprised to be reunited with her dear high school teacher, Sister Teresa, at our dialogue after many years.Dr. Gifta Angilene is a Protestant Christian originally from Odissa, and who now lives and teaches in Kolkata. She was awarded her doctorate degree this past April. And you will never guess what the topic of her thesis was!Amazingly, as a Protestant, she argued that the writings and teachings of Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada can uplift the condition of women in India. Her PhD advisers at her university requested documentation of her idea. Many women who are disciples and followers of Srila Prabhupada wrote papers, each from their own experience, confirming Srila Prabhupada’s egalitarian vision for engaging women equally along with the men in the activities of devotion.Congratulations, Dr. Gifta! This year our topic was entitled Karma, Grace, and Free Will: Perspectives for Integral Transformation. In India, sometimes the philosophy of karma has been misinterpreted and weaponized by sectarian people in order to discriminate and deny social mobility to so-called lower class people. Our Sri Vaisnava participant, Dr. Jagannivas said that in the eyes of God, no one is untouchable. And that this misunderstanding of the varnasram system has created havoc in India.Dr. Israel (an Indian Protestant minister living in Leicester, in the UK) said that millions of the poor are reeling under this system and that we must challenge this travesty.Dr. Ravi Gupta (Radhika Raman Prabhu) described his vision of an Engaged Vaisnavism. He told the story of how the sage, Narada, out of compassion, stepped off his own path to ask the hunter, Mrgrari why he was so cruelly half-killing the animals.Narada expressed the idea of karma in a forward-facing way: You have the capacity to change and to better your future. Seeing karma as a tool to effect positive change in someone’s heart.A suffering condition may be someone’s karma, but it is the dharma of a Vaisnava devotee to assist and uplift whomever he or she meets. The philosophy of karma is not a kind of fatalism. With the blessings of holy company, as we experience in this Vaisnava Christian Dialogue each year, each of us has the capacity to transform our hearts and discover the diamonds of our true identity. This reminds me of a famous quote: “Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of one of these brothers and sisters of Mine, you did for Me.”" -- Matthew 20:40Wishing you all a very happy Christmas, Hanukah, and many blessings to you all in the coming year! All the best,Rukmini Walker

Las perlas de la instrucción

~por Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakur

The Pearls of Instruction

~by Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakur"1. We are put to test and trial in this world. Only those who attend the kirtana of the devotees can succeed.2. Every spot on earth where discourses on God are held is a place of pilgrimage.3. Possession of objects not related to Krsna is our main malady.4. Let me not desire anything but the highest good for my worst enemies.5. As dalliance with the body in luxury increases, so wanes the spirit of service of the Lord.6. Those favored by God find their paths set by thorns.7. There is no peace or happiness in our worldly life. Circumstances create turmoil and annoyance.8. Chant the maha mantra loudly and with attachment. This will drive away inertia, worldly evils and pests.9. Be indifferent to bazaar gossip, stick firmly to your cherished goals, no lack or impediments of the world will ever stand in your way.10. Pay due respects to the extroverts of the world, but do not be appreciative of their manners and conduct. They are to be shaken off from your mind.11. A devotee feels the presence of God everywhere, but one averse to the Lord denies His existence anywhere.12. You cannot appreciate transcendental matters with the reasoning of the world. It is sheer nonsense to decry them with the measuring stick of your intellect.13. To recite the name of Sri Krsna is bhakti.14. Life is for the glorification of topics on Hari. If that is stopped, then what need is there to carry on life.15. Physical illness with Hari-bhajana is preferred to physical fitness without Hari-bhajana.16. Our span of life on earth is short. Our life will be crowned with success if the body wears out with constant discourses on Hari.17. We are here on earth not to work as artisans for making big buildings with wood and stone but to work only as messengers for the teachings of Sri Caitanya Deva.18. A sycophant is neither a guru or a preacher.19. To transform the adverse desires of the jivas is the supreme duty of the most merciful. To rescue one person from the stronghold of Mahamaya is an act of superb benevolence, far superior to opening innumerable hospitals.20. Unless we are devoted to God, secularism shall not leave us.21. Look within. Amend yourself, rather than pry into the frailties of others.22. In this world of Maya, averse to the Lord, full of trials and tribulations, only patience, humility and respect for others are our friends for Hari-bhajana.23. The Lord, Gaurasundara, puts His devotees in various difficulties and associations to test their patience and strength of mind. Success depends on their good fortune.24. When faults in others misguide and delude you – have patience, introspect, find faults in yourself. Know that others cannot harm you unless you harm yourself.25. I wish that every selfless, tender-hearted person of Gaudiya Math will be prepared to shed two hundred gallons of blood for the nourishment of the spiritual corpus of every individual of this world. For further teachings by Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakur, lecture given by His Holiness Radhanath Swami - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ZeySRI-7B4I hope you found this useful as much I do!

A Thanksgiving Meditation

My Dear Friends,

Here is a meditation for your Thanksgiving, inspired by the Rev. Peter Raible:

We build on foundations we did not lay.We warm ourselves with fires we did not light. We sit in the shade of trees we did not plant. We drink from wells we did not dig.We profit from persons we did not know.

This is as it should be.

Together we are more than any one person could be.Together we can build across the generations.Together we can renew our hope and faith in the

Life that is yet to unfold.

Together we can heed the call of care and justice.

We are ever bound in community.May it always be so.

I wish you all a joyous Thanksgiving celebrating in community thegifts all around us, and the gifts yet to come! All the best,Rukmini Walker

Rukmini Walker

Living in the Season: Fall

Here's a deep and sensitive meditation on living in the season of Fall. Written by my sister, Susan, who is a five-element acupuncturist (susanacupuncture.com), and her artist husband, George Mason (georgemasonart.com). "Can we struggle less with what is inevitable, and accept that there is a time to release and let ourselves fall, trusting, into the arms of the unknown?" ~All the best, Rukmini Walker

Living in the Season: Fall

~by Susan Weiser Mason

Here in Damariscotta Mills, there have been a few big blows that have shaken down the deadwood, and the lawn is now strewn with kindling. I see muted colors melding all around me, creating a warm-toned blanket on the landscape of Fall. I admire the poise of this season as it goes about the task of letting go, squarely facing the inevitable, secure in the appropriateness of surrender.Sunlight angles more sharply and with great articulation. The architecture of trees is increasingly evident. In this season the fundamentals are revealed. What warmth remains is appreciated, in part because this could be the last gentle day before Winter sets in. We receive these final offerings with a degree of reverence distinct to this time of year. The harvest is in. Has there been one for you; real or metaphoric? Is the garden put to bed? Is the wood in? Are you ready? The season is patient but precise. Our intellect may wish to negotiate, to extend, but the Fall is not really negotiable. If it were there would be no renewal. It is easy to become rigid in this season, focusing on what’s been left undone, the many ways we are unprepared, and how the impending season is not secure. We may feel we have not put our house in order, and it is hard to let go. We may ache for the health of the planet and insist on remaining ever vigilant.Yet the wisdom of the in-flight attendant rings true; ‘Place the mask over your own face and then help place the mask over the face of your loved one’. We must care for ourselves if we are to care for those we love. The unattended tasks will not be resolved over the weekend. This is, after all, a marathon and not a sprint. Conserve for the work ahead. Prepare by taking into account the need for rest and renewal. The season’s message is to let go, and to trust that letting go is not giving up. We are part of the cycle of the seasons, and that includes the great shake down of Fall. And decline and stillness are the mothers of Spring.Think seasons, not news cycles. The brittle, anxious, fearful, ungrounded quality of the time can leave us vulnerable to manipulation. This cacophony lives alongside the steady flow of our rivers, the breathing of the tides, and the supple swaying of trees. The natural world is a prayer, and we belong to it. Our drama can obscure the reality of how the planet functions with a unitary wisdom. We are not exempt from natures logic or consequences. We are no different than the leaves that settle in a halo of warm-tones on the ground. The challenge for us is to follow the lead of the tree, noting how its leaves let go at the right time, effortlessly. Can we struggle less with what is inevitable and accept there is a time to release and let ourselves fall, trusting, into the arms of the unknown.
