Appearance Day of the Divine Protector - Lord Nrsimihadev
Hare Krishna dear friends,
Today marks the day on which Lord Nrsimihadev appeared to remove the obstacles for a young five-year-old boy named Prahlada. The day is called Nrshima Caturdasi and is the appearance of Lord Krishna in the form of half man-lion incarnation.
The obstacles Prahlada faced were the anger and wrath of his father, named Hiranyakasipu who controlled the world. Hiranyakasipu was extremely proud and hated Lord Vishnu (or Krishna). His son, however, was a great devotee of Lord Vishnu and constantly thought of Lord Vishnu. Thus they were always at odds with each other. One day Hiranyakasiphu asked his little son where the Lord resides, and Prahlada replied that the Lord resides everywhere.
This greatly angered Hiranyakasipu and asked Prahlada- Well if He’s everywhere, is He in this pillar? Hiranyakaysipu was ready to kill Prahlada and struck the pillar. However, to substantiate Prahlada’s statements, the Lord emerges from the pillar in His wonderful incarnation as Nrsimhadev, a half lion and half man.
The backstory tells us that Hiranyakashipu could not be killed by a man or a beast, nor on land or sea, neither day nor night and, without weapons. So with all these benedictions, Hiranyakashipu had thought he had it all covered and no one would ever defeat him. However, the Lord tricked him and attacked Hiranyakashipu at twilight (when it is neither day nor night) on the threshold of a courtyard (neither indoors nor outdoors), and placed the evil Hiranyakaspyu on his thighs (neither earth nor air). Then using his claws (neither living nor non-living), he defeated Hiranyakasiphu. This tells us that the Lord can defeat our mundane calculations, no matter how greatly thought out they are.
Although Lord Nrsimhadev’s form looks somewhat frightening to those who may not know the story, the incarnation is one of deep compassion for living beings. Lord Nrsimha Deva is the protector of His devotees and remover of all obstacles and difficulties in the path of devotion to the Lord.
Anyone can offer prayers to Lord Nrsimhadev to request guidance in hard times just as he guided and protected little Prahlada.

Srimati Sita Devi‘s Appearance Day - Sita Navami

Today marks the appearance of Sita Devi, who was not born in any mother’s womb. She appeared from the Earth, and she went back to the Earth.
Once when Maharaja Janak was ploughing fields, he found a baby girl from the earth. He accepted her as his daughter and raised her as his very own. Sri Ram is powerful, and Sita Devi is his power. If we take shelter from the power, we will automatically come into the shelter of the Powerful.
In the famous epic Ramayana, wherever there is Sita Devi, no demons were killed. They received punishment- such as Jayant, and even Shrupnakha was not killed, was punishment for cutting off her nose. Sita Devi has a soft shelter for all. And she taught a lesson that we should destroy sins, not sinful people.
After the death of Ravana, Sri Hanuman wanted to kill those demons who troubled Sita Devi, but she told Sri Hanuman that there were no faults in these servants; they just obeyed the order of their master. This is the mercy of Sita Devi, taking shelter of whom we get Sri Ram’s shelter too.
The most important lesson Sita Devi told all of us is that just like she had to be separated from Sri Ram due to her attraction to a Golden Deer similarly, our attraction towards material things moves us all away from the Lord. Thus staying in the circle of repeated life and death and facing all miseries.
Sita Devi’s radiance and inner strength serve as an inspiration to women around the world, reminding us of the importance of maintaining a spiritual connection in our lives.

(Recording) Urban Devi Feb Sanga: Befriending our Parts w/Symala Priya Devi Dasi

Mental and emotional care are important branches on the tree of holistic care for our community. In this sanga we will explore and practice strategies to help us attune with our inner parts with the goal of becoming more appreciative and receptive to our position as part and parcel of Krishna. Since Krishna Consciousness is a relational and transformative process, we sometimes need to upgrade and mobilize that process from within. Syamala will share tools inspired by Internal Family Systems, Brainspotting, and EMDR psychotherapy practices. This will be an experiential sanga with time for sharing and reflections in small groups.
Speaker bio: Symala Priya Devi Dasi was introduced to Krishna Consciousness in Washington, DC in 2010 through yoga classes with Hari-kirtana das. She continued to take workshops and courses with Hari-kirtana on yoga philosophy from a Vaisnava perspective, which helped Symala deepen her understanding gradually and organically. She feels fortunate to be part of the Institute for Applied Spirituality (IFAST) and ISKCON of DC communities.
By profession, Symala is a licensed psychotherapist with a holistic approach to mental health care. She is passionate about empowering people of all ages to mindfully engage in a process of self-discovery and transformation. The name of her private practice was inspired by her spiritual teacher, Radhanath Swami (InnerFoundationsCounseling.
Symala Priya likes to assist in organizing a variety of community events that help people connect with each other, as well as enrich their relationship with devotional service. She serves as a local representative for the Intimate Partner Abuse Prevention Initiative and Vaishnavi Ministry of North America.
Appearance Day of Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakur

February 10th is the holy Appearance Day of Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakur, the beloved guru of our beloved Srila Prabhupada.
Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakur was a lifelong celibate, first as a brahmacari, and then a sannyasi, a brilliant scholar and author, and known for his uncompromising devotion to speaking the truth, even among those who opposed him and even threatened his life. He was also amazingly progressive in his views on utilizing everything of the modern world in the service of the Lord.
In the following excerpt from his Harmonist newspaper, he expresses such progressive views on relationships between a husband and wife, in a spiritual relationship, which is called the grihastha ashram. The following article is entitled, “Relations Between the Sexes”.
“The cardinal principle of grihastha ashram is that no one may be the owner of any property or service of another. Everyone is only a servant whose activities are ever in service of the Lord. Similarly, the sole object of everyone’s service as the only master, only friend, only son, and only consort is Kṛṣṇa.
Marrying and giving in marriage do not give rise to any rights of a master either to the husband or to the wife. Men and women are joined in wedlock for the purpose of serving each other in the performance of the joint service of Kṛṣṇa. The wife is not an object of enjoyment of the husband, nor vice versa. They do not marry for gratifying their sexual appetites. They marry for pleasing the Lord, not for pleasing themselves.
They choose for their partners only such persons who serve God better than themselves. They offer themselves to be accepted by their partners for the favor of being allowed to share in their superior service of Hari. Neither the husband nor the wife should claim the services of his or her partner on their own account. Both of them are only to offer their services if and when their partner is pleased to permit them to share their service of Hari. None of them can force their partners to serve them…
The reason why the guru does not ordinarily ask any person to enter the state of wedlock is that it is very rare to find anyone in this world who is willing to regard his or her wife or husband as worthy of his or her unconditional services. This is, however, exactly the only relationship between husband and wife that alone can be sanctioned by the guru.”
Can we also strive to extend such unconditional loving service to each other, and all others we meet as we try to share the teachings of Lord Sri Kṛṣṇa through this Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement?

Estimados Vaishnavas y Vaishnavis,
Nuestras más respetuosas reverencias a todos ustedes. Todas las glorias a nuestro amado Fundador-Acharya, Srila Prabhupada.
Somos un grupo de mujeres discípulas de Srila Prabhupada que han estado sirviendo sinceramente a su ISKCON durante cincuenta y tantos años.
Hemos estado al frente de la predicación; hemos ayudado a construir y mantener templos; hemos traducido, producido y distribuido libros BBT y hemos traído a muchos de nuestros líderes actuales al movimiento de Srila Prabhupada. También hemos criado familias, ayudado a hacer crecer comunidades y practicado la conciencia de Krsna con dedicación y fe.

Es desafortunado que algunas mujeres en ISKCON sientan que se les impide servir a Srila Prabhupada como él imaginó. Muchas también han perdido la fe y se han ido de nuestra sociedad por la falta de respeto o el abuso que recibieron en nuestros templos por parte de las autoridades masculinas.
Además, hay mujeres que han perdido la confianza o han sido perjudicadas por figuras de autoridad masculinas incluso antes de unirse a ISKCON. Como resultado, algunas de esas mujeres sienten que pueden abrir sus corazones más sinceramente y revelar mejor sus mentes a una Vaishnavi Diksha gurú.
Una mujer dijo que si no puede recibir la iniciación de la Vaishnavi gurú de su elección, esperará hasta su próxima vida para recibir la iniciación. Esto es desgarrador. ¿Por qué debería dejarse en el limbo a una aspirante seria y calificada, especialmente porque el GBC ya había dado sus bendiciones a las Vaishnavi Diksha gurús, pero luego retiró abruptamente esas bendiciones?
¿Por qué no permitir que unas pocas Vaishnavis calificadas inicien a algunos discípulos sinceros y merecedores? (Al menos algunas mujeres discípulas). ¿Cuál es el daño? Ningún daño en absoluto, según Prabhupada y sastra:
“La calificación de guru es que debe ser plenamente consciente de la ciencia de Kṛṣṇa. Entonces él o ella puede convertirse en gurú. Yei kṛṣṇa-tattva-vettā, sei guru haya.” (Entrevista con los profesores O'Connell, Motilal y Shivaram, 18 de junio de 1976, Toronto)
En una carta a Hansadutta, Prabhupada escribió: “Quiero que todos mis hijos e hijas espirituales hereden este título de Bhaktivedanta para que el diploma familiar trascendental continúe a través de las generaciones. Aquellos que posean el título de Bhaktivedanta podrán iniciar discípulos… Ese es mi programa”.

Algunos de los que quieren impedir que las discípulas de Prabhupada cumplan su orden se apresuran a hacer referencia a las sampradayas que prohíben a las mujeres iniciar. ¿Por qué ignorar a los que las permiten?
A lo largo de la historia de la Gaudiya, las mujeres han estado dando iniciación. Incluso hoy en día, las mujeres dan iniciación en diferentes ramas de la Gaudiya Math. En Nimbarka Sampradaya, ha habido mujeres maestras espirituales durante mil años. Y también hay otras mujeres gurús en la India actual.
Dentro de ISKCON, las Vaishnavi Diksha gurús han sido respaldadas por el SAC (Consejo Asesor Sastric), el SABHA (Asamblea Bhagavat de Asesores Espirituales), el Consejo de América del Norte, el Consejo Australiano y varios Ministerios de ISKCON. ¿Sus voces, como las de las discípulas de Prabhupada, tampoco cuentan?
Algunos devotos sostienen que las mujeres pueden dar siksha o instrucción, pero no diksha. Sin embargo, en su significado de CC Adi 1.34, Srila Prabhupada escribe: “Los maestros espirituales que inician e instruyen son manifestaciones iguales e idénticas de Krsna, aunque tienen tratos diferentes”. Y, en su significado de Adi 1.47, Su Divina Gracia aclara aún más: “Si uno discrimina tontamente entre ellos, comete una ofensa en el desempeño del servicio devocional”.

De nuevo, ¿es la intención de algunos que se oponen a que una Vaishnavi calificada dé iniciación de detener hasta que las restantes discípulas de Srila Prabhupada hayan fallecido? Entonces se podría decir a las generaciones futuras de vaisnavis: “Las discípulas directas de Srila Prabhupada no dieron iniciación, entonces, ¿cómo pueden ustedes?”.
Los proponentes de la moratoria afirman que su objetivo principal es discutir y aclarar el tema del guru-tattva en ISKCON. Pero si eso es cierto, ¿por qué no suspender todas las iniciaciones tanto de hombres como de mujeres? ¿Por qué suspender sólo las iniciaciones de mujeres?
En 2021, el GBC adoptó una resolución que reconoció la "sensibilidad cultural" en diferentes áreas del mundo. Es decir, si una determinada región no estuviera a favor de las Vaishnavi Diksha gurús, entonces esa área sería libre de "optar por no participar" o prohibir las VDG. En otras palabras, cada región decidiría qué serviría mejor a su comunidad y necesidades de predicación.
Damos la bienvenida a la necesidad de sensibilidad cultural, como lo hizo una abrumadora mayoría de los GBC votantes. Pero algunas voces en la India, ignorando el llamado de Srila Prabhupada a la “unidad en la diversidad”, se han negado a respetar aquellas áreas del mundo con necesidades de prédica diferentes a las suyas.
Las enseñanzas de Prabhupada son claras: quiere que nos unamos en torno a principios espirituales universales mientras diversificamos su aplicación “en términos de tiempo, país y candidato” (CC Madhya 23.105 significado).
Esta es la clave para encontrar la cooperación que necesitaremos para llevar la conciencia de Krsna a todos los pueblos y aldeas. De hecho, como dijo Prabhupada en su último año con nosotros, nuestro amor por él se demostrará en la forma en que cooperamos juntos. Sin embargo, aquellos que se oponen a la diversidad ahora están destruyendo nuestra unidad. Con todo respeto, esto no es cooperación; es coacción.
Algunas personas sostienen que, dado que Srila Prabhupada no seleccionó a ninguna mujer para dar la iniciación, después de su partida, tampoco deberíamos hacerlo nosotros. Pero tampoco, por ejemplo, Su Divina Gracia seleccionó a ningún devoto indio, chino, africano o ruso.
¿Significa esto que los devotos masculinos de esos orígenes no son elegibles para ofrecer diksha en ISKCON? Por supuesto que no. Srila Prabhupada descartó la concepción corporal de la vida. Entonces, ¿por qué ahora aferrarse al mismo concepto erróneo y discriminar a las Vaishnavis?
En el occidente, los profesores nos cuentan que los dos temas que más preocupan a los universitarios son el cuidado del medio ambiente y la equidad de la mujer. Y en el Occidente, muchas personas educadas de segunda y tercera generación de la diáspora india dicen que negarles a las mujeres la igualdad de oportunidades socava su interés en la conciencia de Krsna.
¿No debería esto motivarnos a adoptar la “sensibilidad cultural” y las instrucciones de Srila Prabhupada con respecto al “tiempo, lugar y circunstancia” como principios fundamentales de su movimiento global?
Queridos devotos del futuro: Si a las discípulas calificadas de Srila Prabhupada, que ahora tienen 70 años, no se les permite ofrecer iniciación, sepan con certeza que darles esta oportunidad de servicio fue el deseo y la instrucción de nuestro amado Fundador-Acharya. Por favor, no permitan que este servicio sea negado a Vaishnavis calificadas de su generación, como hasta ahora ha sido negado a la nuestra.
Finalmente, queridos líderes de ISKCON, humildemente les preguntamos: ¿Pueden permitir que algunas mujeres mayores que han servido fielmente a ISKCON durante unos cincuenta años ofrezcan iniciación como Prabhupada quería en aquellas áreas del mundo que les dan la bienvenida? ¿No se puede honrar la sensibilidad cultural que se avaló recientemente?

Karma, Gracia y Libre Albedrío - Perspectivas para la Transformación Integral Vaisnava Christian Diálogo
Queridos amigos,
Con la Navidad acercándose en unos pocos días, pensé que podría resultar interesante escuchar un informe sobre nuestro reciente Diálogo Cristiano Vaisnava que se llevó a cabo en línea la semana pasada con participantes católicos, protestantes, Sri Vaisnava y Gaudiya Vaisnava en India, EE. UU. y el Reino Unido.
Mi esposo, Anuttama y yo hemos estado organizando dos diálogos de este tipo cada año. Nuestro diálogo en el área de DC donde vivimos, que ha continuado durante más de veinticinco años, en persona hasta Covid. El pasado abril nos volvimos a encontrar en persona por primera vez en dos años en nuestro templo de ISKCON de DC.
Nuestro diálogo en la India ha durado unos diez años. Presencial antes del Covid, y ahora en línea desde hace unos años.
Los participantes son todos profesionales, y muchos de ellos académicos y profesores. Algunos son sacerdotes jesuitas, una es monja católica y otro también es arzobispo. No tenemos audiencia. Ha sido un encuentro de corazones auténticos a través de fronteras religiosas y culturales.
Nuestro formato es que cada año anterior, elegimos conjuntamente un tema. Cuatro miembros acuerdan escribir artículos, desde la perspectiva de su propia tradición, uno desde la perspectiva de un cristiano protestante, uno desde una perspectiva católica, uno compartiendo como Sri Vaisnava y otro desde una perspectiva de Gaudiya Vaisnava.
Culturalmente, este diálogo es interesante y diferente en el sentido de que muchos de los participantes son practicantes de una religión minoritaria (cristianos en India, vaisnavas en EE. UU.) en un país donde la mayoría de la población sigue otra tradición religiosa.
En este diálogo también tenemos algunos vaisnavas nacidos en la India (hombres, mujeres y sannyasis) que crecieron asistiendo a escuelas católicas y se sienten agradecidos por la educación moral fundamental que recibieron allí.
Una de nuestras participantes, Parijata Devi de Mumbai, se sorprendió gratamente al reunirse con su querida maestra de secundaria, la hermana Teresa, en nuestro diálogo después de muchos años.
La Dra. Gifta Angilene es una cristiana protestante originaria de Odissa y que ahora vive y enseña en Kolkata. Recibió su doctorado el abril pasado. ¡Y nunca adivinarás cuál fue el tema de su tesis!
Sorprendentemente, como protestante, argumentó que los escritos y las enseñanzas de Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada pueden mejorar la condición de la mujer en la India. Sus asesores de doctorado en su universidad solicitaron documentación de su idea.
Muchas mujeres que son discípulas y seguidoras de Srila Prabhupada escribieron artículos, cada uno desde su propia experiencia, confirmando la visión igualitaria de Srila Prabhupada de involucrar a las mujeres por igual junto con los hombres en las actividades de la devoción.

Este año nuestro tema se tituló Karma, Gracia y Libre Albedrío: Perspectivas para la Transformación Integral.
En la India, a veces la filosofía del karma ha sido malinterpretada y armada por personas sectarias para discriminar y negar la movilidad social a las personas de supuestamente clase baja.
Nuestro participante Sri Vaisnava, el Dr. Jagannivas dijo que a los ojos de Dios, nadie es intocable. Y que este malentendido del sistema varnasram ha creado estragos en la India.
El Dr. Israel (un ministro protestante indio que vive en Leicester, en el Reino Unido) dijo que millones de pobres se tambalean bajo este sistema y que debemos desafiar esta farsa.
El Dr. Ravi Gupta (Radhika Raman Prabhu) describió su visión de un vaisnavismo de acción. Contó la historia de cómo el sabio, Narada, por compasión, se apartó de su propio camino para preguntarle al cazador, Mrgrari, por qué estaba medio matando a los animales con tanta crueldad.
Narada expresó la idea del karma de una manera orientada hacia el futuro: Tienes la capacidad de cambiar y mejorar tu futuro. Ver el karma como una herramienta para efectuar un cambio positivo en el corazón de alguien.
Una condición de sufrimiento puede ser el karma de alguien, pero es el dharma de un devoto vaisnava ayudar y elevar a quien sea que se encuentre. La filosofía del karma no es una especie de fatalismo.
Con las bendiciones de la sagrada compañía, como experimentamos en este Diálogo Cristiano Vaisnava cada año, cada uno de nosotros tiene la capacidad de transformar nuestros corazones y descubrir los diamantes de nuestra verdadera identidad.

Every spot on earth where discourses on God are held is a place of pilgrimage.3. Possession of objects not related to Krsna is our main malady.4. Let me not desire anything but the highest good for my worst enemies.5. As dalliance with the body in luxury increases, so wanes the spirit of service of the Lord.6. Those favored by God find their paths set by thorns.7. There is no peace or happiness in our worldly life. Circumstances create turmoil and annoyance.8. Chant the maha mantra loudly and with attachment. This will drive away inertia, worldly evils and pests.9. Be indifferent to bazaar gossip, stick firmly to your cherished goals, no lack or impediments of the world will ever stand in your way.10. Pay due respects to the extroverts of the world, but do not be appreciative of their manners and conduct. They are to be shaken off from your mind.11. A devotee feels the presence of God everywhere, but one averse to the Lord denies His existence anywhere.12. You cannot appreciate transcendental matters with the reasoning of the world. It is sheer nonsense to decry them with the measuring stick of your intellect.13. To recite the name of Sri Krsna is bhakti.14. Life is for the glorification of topics on Hari. If that is stopped, then what need is there to carry on life.15. Physical illness with Hari-bhajana is preferred to physical fitness without Hari-bhajana.16. Our span of life on earth is short. Our life will be crowned with success if the body wears out with constant discourses on Hari.17. We are here on earth not to work as artisans for making big buildings with wood and stone but to work only as messengers for the teachings of Sri Caitanya Deva.18. A sycophant is neither a guru or a preacher.19. To transform the adverse desires of the jivas is the supreme duty of the most merciful. To rescue one person from the stronghold of Mahamaya is an act of superb benevolence, far superior to opening innumerable hospitals.20. Unless we are devoted to God, secularism shall not leave us.21. Look within. Amend yourself, rather than pry into the frailties of others.22. In this world of Maya, averse to the Lord, full of trials and tribulations, only patience, humility and respect for others are our friends for Hari-bhajana.23. The Lord, Gaurasundara, puts His devotees in various difficulties and associations to test their patience and strength of mind. Success depends on their good fortune.24. When faults in others misguide and delude you – have patience, introspect, find faults in yourself. Know that others cannot harm you unless you harm yourself.25. In 1992, she joined ISKCON in Boston, Massachusetts where she served as a head cook, preparing Deity offerings and managing the kitchen, as well as cooking for feasts, festivals, public programs, and events. Nanda-Nandana has trained in and taught seminars in Non-violent Communication, Mediation, Leadership Training, and Bhakti Sastri. Entering into Kartik
Kartik, also known as the month of Damodara, is a month for deepening one's love for Krishna. This year Kartik begins on October 9, 2022. It is considered by devotees of Krishna to be the holiest month of the year. During this month, devotees make extra vows, perform extra spiritual activities, and generally worship Krishna in His form as a young boy,Here is a beautiful recording of Gaura Vani and Sri Vani Devi Dasi together singing the Damodarastakam prayers. Every year during the month of Kartik we offer this special 8 verse prayer to Krishna called Damodarastakam. It is sung either in the morning or the evening along with the offering of a ghee lamp.

Este año 2022 es la celebración del aniversario de la llegada e instalación de Sri Sri Radha Govinda-ji en el templo de Brooklyn en Nueva York en Henry Street, donde yo estaba sirviendo como pujari. Ofendí gravemente a su Señoría en ese momento, y nos enteramos de que estaba furioso por todo lo que habíamos hecho por instigación mía. My Eternal Father and Master, Srila Prabhupada,

This year 2022, is the celebration of the anniversary of Sri Sri Radha Govinda-ji's arrival and installation in New York's Brooklyn temple on Henry Street, where I was serving as pujari. I made grieves offenses to your Lordship at that time, and we heard that you were furious about all that we'd done at my instigation. I was ignorant, but as I have heard you say many times, ignorance is no excuse; fire will burn even an innocent child if she comes too close. I was that ignorant child, and I was so remorseful after hearing about your anger. I felt that my spiritual life was over and that I would surely die. I wrote you a letter expressing my grief and shame, but your compassion and forgiveness surpassed my comprehension and imagination. Your return letter never mentioned my offenses but rather stunned me with undeserved praise.
Here is a quote from Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta Antya-līlā verse 4.47 --
- “If by chance a servant falls down and goes somewhere else, glorious is that master who captures him and brings him back by the hair.
Later that year, you personally came to our Brooklyn temple. Sri Sri Radha Govinda-ji were dressed in a simple outfit. Govinda-ji in His classic yellow dhoti and Srimati Radharani in a Vrindavan style skirt and chuni. The temple room was crammed with guests eager to hear your Sunday lecture. You entered the long narrow temple room and walked to the front, where you stood with folded hands, gazing at your worshipful Lords for a very long time. I had just finished performing the aarti ceremony, and I hid behind the left had curtain trying to be invisible. As you started to bow down to offer your obeisances, I saw tears shoot out of your eyes like a syringe, just as we'd seen in pictures of Lord Caitanya at Ratha Yatra. The devotees on the right side of the temple room were splashed with tears. I saw them looking around to see where the water had come from. Had the pujari thrown water from the aarti ceremony over their heads? As you so humbly bowed down, I jumped off the side of the altar, telling my friend Palika, those are Srila Prabhupada's tears. We both gathered your precious sacred teardrops up from the floor and smeared them on our heads again and again.When shall my eyes be decorated with tears of love such as yours? When shall my heart be decorated with compassion and forgiveness such as yours?
